Benue Declares Public Holiday to Honour President Tinubu’s Visit — 1,043 Lives Lost Amid Security Crisis
The Benue State Government has officially declared a work-free day in honour of the visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, the public holiday is meant to enable residents across the state to come out en masse and welcome the President during his scheduled visit.
> “This is in honour of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read.
The announcement comes at a time of intense scrutiny, as reports indicate that 1,043 people were killed in Benue State between May 2023 and May 2025 due to persistent insecurity, largely attributed to attacks by armed herders and other violent groups.
While the government’s gesture is being positioned as a mark of respect and solidarity, critics argue it may overshadow the deep-seated security and humanitarian crisis that continues to plague parts of the state.
President Tinubu’s visit is expected to include high-level meetings and potential policy announcements but citizens will also be watching closely to see whether his presence will address the real and painful losses suffered by the people of Benue.
